Catholic Parent Involvement Committee (CPIC) to Host Speaker Series


The Catholic Parent Involvement Committee (CPIC) at HCDSB is pleased to be hosting a speaker series throughout the month of June.

CPIC is a group of parents, trustees and Board staff who actively support parent engagement and involvement throughout the Halton Catholic District School Board. 

CPIC provides an opportunity for Catholic School Council members to network, offer input and facilitate informative presentations on a number of education related topics throughout the school year.

For the health and safety of our HCDSB community, all sessions will be offered virtually.


Disability Reframed

Ashley Harris Whaley, M.S., CCC-SLP

Ashley Harris Whaley is an online disability educator, writer, and public speaker. Her lifelong lived experience as a physically disabled person with cerebral palsy informs all work that she does.

Ashley will be joining us to speak about raising anti-ableist kids and helping us to change our perspective and biases around disability. This session is designed to help parents understand anti-ableism and how to help their children interact with their peers and adults with disabilities in a respectful and inclusive way.

Parenting: Navigating Everything

Brett Ullman travels North America speaking to teens, young adults, leaders and parents on topics including parenting, mental health and media.

As parents, we all want the best for our kids. The number of voices speaking on this issue are overwhelming. How do we sift through the unending philosophies that are available on parenting and be intentional in how we choose what is best for our family?

During this talk, Brett will distill the essential elements of parenting to help you apply them in your own home.  Approaching parenting from a Christian perspective, this talk will cover different parenting styles, communication, time and discipline.

Room for All: A Catholic Approach to 2SLGBTQI+ Supports

Michael Way Skinner

Michael was born in Newfoundland as the 9th of 10 Children of Mi’kmaq & Irish heritage. He is an award winning Catholic Educator who has worked in Catholic Education for the past 30 years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (1st Class Honours) from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, N.S. He has a  Masters of Divinity from Harvard University, and completed the PRSE (Program in Religion and Secondary Education) in conjunction with the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is an author, curriculum writer and international speaker.

In March 2020, he and his wife published a book with Novalis Publishing Canada – There Must be a Pony in Here Somewhere: Everyday Stories of God’s Goodness. With his wife, Christine, he has parented 6 children.

Parents are able to access a Room for All, a pre-recorded 5-part video series with Michael Way Skinner on the HCDSB YouTube channel.

The video series will discuss 2SLGBTQI+ supports from a Catholic approach.
