All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations. Matthew 28.18,19
Questions of power and authority are raised in Sunday’s three readings. Right up until Jesus ascended to heaven, some of his closest followers were expecting him to restore Israel’s sovereignty. Jesus’ mission was far greater than the momentary struggles of one country. He has authority over all; he is the power that rules all powers. In our mission to proclaim his good news, we also have authority, which derives from God. Our power has its source in Jesus’ saving word.
Jesus, you entrust us with a sacred mission.
Before we dare to proclaim your word to others,
may we first take time to listen closely,
to fully understand what it means to love one another.
Lord our world is full of false authorities and the misuse of power.
Let us not be discouraged, but be ourselves, authors of a fuller story;
a story built on a love of you, self and others,
a pursuit of truth and a dedication to whatever is good.
