Go Code Girl

Go CODE Girl is an exciting free virtual event for young women in Grades 7 to 10. On Saturday, January 30, 2021 McMaster University, Faculty of Engineering will be hosting a Virtual Go CODE Girl ENG Girl event.
Participants will get the chance to develop their coding skills with a fun virtual project. This coding project will help expose participants to the fields of engineering and computer science, as well as how they can use technology to solve everyday problems. Students will learn about sound waves and sonar technology, as well as its applications and challenges.

This project will connect to the UN Sustainable Development Goal #13 Climate Change, by highlighting sonar’s use in monitoring ocean carbon capture systems for gas leaks. Students will then code in Python to create a simple interactive game that simulates ocean sonar devices. Coding concepts that will be covered include classes, GUI design using Tkinter, and game design.

Go CODE Girl Virtual Event is being held on Zoom. Please set up a Zoom account in advance of our event and join the event call 10-15 minutes early. It is recommended that participants use a computer (not a tablet) to complete the project.

Each student that will be attending must register on-line. More information about the program and the registration can be found on our website: https://youthprograms.eng.mcmaster.ca/programs/list/virtual-go-code-girl

The Go CODE Girl Event will have two sessions, where they will run the same project but at different paces – only register for one session. The Zoom link and instructions will be sent to the individual emails that have registered to ensure safety within the call.

Session 1 (Beginner): 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The first session is meant for beginner coders who have little to no previous coding experience. This session will be sure that no previous knowledge of code is required and will teach participants all of the fundamentals.

Session 2 (Intermediate) 12:30 pm – 2:30 p.m. The second session is designed for intermediate coders who have previous coding experience. This session will still do a brief overview of the fundamentals needed to complete the project, ensuring all coding levels will be able to participate.
However, in order for this day to be a success, we need your assistance. We ask that you provide the enclosed information to students in your school who you feel may benefit from and enjoy this experience. Please invite them to participate in what will surely be an interesting and educational day. We ask that students register independently, first come first serve. Space is limited so please register early.

The Go CODE Girl programs are being coordinated by the Ontario Women in Engineering (ONWiE) group with the support of the Council of Ontario Deans of Engineering. All Faculties and Schools of Engineering are working together to encourage young women to study engineering and to ensure that old stereotypes of the profession are dispelled. We hope that many of the students from your school will be able to take advantage of this opportunity.
