World Religion Day

“The different religions, based on their respect for each human person as a creature called to be a child of God, contribute significantly to building fraternity and defending justice in society.” (Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti)

The third Sunday in January is annually observed as World Religion Day. This year, it falls on Sunday, January 17, 2021.

World Religion Day was established in 1950 to recognize the commonalities that different faiths share, and to promote inter-faith understanding and unity. On this day, members of all faiths are encouraged to share their religious beliefs and listen to others about theirs.

At HCDSB, we believe in the dignity of all people, knowing that all children are created in the image of God. We recognize and value the importance of freedom of religion, and honour the many customs, traditions and beliefs of the individuals who make up our vibrant HCDSB community.

World Religion Day provides an opportunity to talk to your children about your faith. You may also consider attending a virtual inter-faith service, or researching with your children to learn more about different religions.

The Interfaith Council of Halton is holding an online multifaith discussion at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2021. All are welcome to attend. Click here for more information and to register.

In the words of Pope Benedict at the 25th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace in 2011:

“We commit ourselves to educating people to mutually respect and honor each other in order to help bring about peaceful and fraternal co-existence between people of different ethnic groups, cultures and religions.”

On World Religion Day, and every day, let us celebrate our human fraternity and solidarity, as we pray for peace, unity and good will in our community.
