Indigenous History Month

Indigenous History Month! Did you know there are four Inuit regions in Canada, collectively known as Inuit (new-nun-gut) Nunangat? The term “Inuit Nunangat” includes land, water, and ice. Inuit consider the land, water, and ice of their homeland to be integral to their culture and way of life since time immemorial. The majority of the Inuit population lives in 51 communities spread across this homeland, encompassing 35% of Canada’s landmass and 50% of its coastline. Their communities are among the most culturally resilient in North America. Roughly 60% of Inuit report an ability to conduct a conversation in – Inuktut – (the Inuit language) and they still harvest foods such as seal, narwhal and caribou to feed their families and communities!

Your Voice is Power – National Indigenous History Month

We continue to celebrate National Indigenous History month, by playing songs coded by Mrs. Mascarenhas’ Indigenous Studies class and Mrs. Alfano’s Gr 10 math class that promotes one of the 94 Calls to Action outlined by the TRC. Today we are featuring a song coded by William Crosato and Samuel Wice. They write….” Our call to action is about committing to the elimination of over representation of aboriginal youth in jail. We chose this call to action because we believe this to be a very big issue in today’s time and one that needs to be addressed more than it currently has been.” Let’s listen to their song …..
