Treaties Week

An important message from the Indigenous Advocacy Committee. For the fourth day of Treaties Recognition Week, we will focus on the treaties found in Ontario. There are 46 treaties and other agreements covering Ontario, which split into four different series: the Numbered Treaties covering north Ontario, the Robinson Treaties covering the shores of Lake Huron and Lake Superior, the Williams Treaties covering south-central Ontario, and lastly, the Upper Canada Treaties covering south-western Ontario. The Head of the Lake Purchase, a treaty under the Upper Canada Treaties, covers Oakville and Mississauga and was signed on September 5th, 1806, by representatives of the Crown and certain Mississauga peoples. The recognition of the treaties in Ontario is a crucial part of the reconciliation process between non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples in Canada.
