French Immersion
Students that have been learning in the HCDSB’s French Immersion program in elementary school, are eligible to select the French Immersion program in Grade 9. Students will have completed a minimum of 3800 hours of French Immersion throughout their elementary program. To complete their French Immersion certificate, students will need to complete a minimum of 10 French courses.
Here are the potential French Immersion courses by grade.
- Grade 9 (French, Geography, Religion and Art)
- Grade 10 (French, History, Religion and Careers/Civics; note Civics/Careers is offered in French at summer school rather than day school)
- Grade 11 (French, Religion)
- Grade 12 (French)
French Immersion students who are planning on pursuing the IB pathway will be able to challenge the DELF exam. IB candidate students should be taking NAC1OM (Art) and CHV2OF/GLC2OF (Careers & Civics, offered in French at summer school rather than day school) in French to ensure they have enough credits to complete the French Immersion Certificate.
Extended French
Students that have been learning in the HCDSB’s Extended French program in elementary school, are eligible to select the Extended French program in Grade 9. Students will have completed a minimum of 1260 hours of Extended French throughout their elementary program. To complete their Extended French certificate, students will need to complete a minimum of 7 French courses.

Students who are currently in an Extended French program in elementary school are not eligible to join the Immersion program, but are eligible to be apply to the Pre-IB program at St, Kateri and challenge the DELF exam.
