The Halton Catholic District School Board is currently offering the STEAM Program starting in Grade 9 at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School in Oakville!
STEAM is a holistic approach to learning that interconnects multiple subject areas: Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. These subjects are used as access points for guiding student learning through:
- Problem/Project-based Learning
- Inquiry
- Design Process/Thinking
- Collaboration
STEAM prepares our students for future work through dynamic and relevant learning experiences that are rooted in the real-world. The students of tomorrow need to adapt and react to a rapidly changing world; a future in which some jobs do not yet exist. Empowering students to be the architects of their own learning and guiding them through that process is what STEAM educators aim to accomplish.
About the STEAM Program at Loyola
- Loyola’s STEAM Program involves cohorting of STEAM students in the morning. Students receive instruction in 4 bundled STEAM courses (Science, Technological Design, Math, and English) that are delivered for the entire school year. Afternoon instruction of non-STEAM courses are delivered in semester format.
- Instruction is rooted in interdisciplinary project-based learning, focused on solutions to real world problems. Delivery is inquiry-based, hands-on, collaborative, and develops transferable skills applicable to all post-secondary pathways.
