Assumption in the News

Ella Power

Assumption Catholic Secondary School is very excited to share the accomplishments of Ella Power.

This past month, Ella competed at a gymnastics selection trial hosted by the Burlington Gymnastics Club. Ella competed against our province’s best female artistic gymnasts and came in 2nd All Around earning a place on Team Ontario who will be representing Ontario at the Canada Winter Games 2023. This renowned Canadian event that comes once every 4 years, will host over 3000 athletes and coaches spanning over 20 different winter sports and starts with the Opening Ceremonies on February 18, 2023, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

The Assumption community wish Ella all the best on this journey.
Congratulations Ella!

Jack Lehto

September 2022 – Jack Lehto of Assumption Catholic SS in Burlington cites Brian Maxwell as a motivating influence upon his learning more of Brian’s legacy. Jack came to love running once he entered high school and, like Brian, he has embraced the opportunity he was given and has worked hard to be the best runner he can be, all the while making life-long friends and growing through this sport.

Jack showed steady improvement in cross country, beginning in grade 9 where he placed 29th at OFSAA. In grade 10, he was 12th and after the pandemic cancelled grade 11, he was sixth this past OFSAA Championship. In track and field, he capped off a great high school career with a ninth-place finish in the 1500m and sixth place finish in the 3000m this past June.

He is a well-rounded student-athlete, who has participated in a variety of sports and taken part in other activities to help him grow as a person. He joined his school swim team this past year and having never swum competitively before, won his region title. He also joined the school Model UN team to improve his confidence as a public speaker as well as to learn about different world issues.

Other activities he is most proud of include his volunteer hours. He has over 233 hours of community service in activities with his track and field club, special needs camp counsellor, guide dog program, and as a sailing instructor.

Some of Jack’s other interests are in robotics and coding – two very unique skills for the modern world we live in.

Jack will be attending the University of Guelph this fall for Mechanical Engineering and will be vying for a spot on the Gryphons’ Cross Country Team
