LIGHTS… CAMERA… ACTION!

It’s been three full months since our very own STFX Drama Club has begun whipping up the perfect production, fit for the perfect group of actors, singers, dancers, and technicians! Their time to shine was finally here! This year’s production,

In The Heights, originally written by Lin Manuel Miranda for Broadway and adapted for STFX!

Wednesday, December 6th, the group of talented students joined together in harmony for their big opening night! School doors opened at 6 pm,–over 200 family members and friends gathered and mingled amongst themselves in excitement, as there were only minutes left until the show would begin. Best Buddies Club, run by Ms Warren, sold popcorn and drinks, and as the doors to the theatre opened, viewers began spilling in, getting comfortable in their seats as they anticipated an excellent show.

The lights were dimmed, and we guests were graciously greeted by teachers, Ms. Korczak and Ms. Boere to commence the show. They made note of the wonderfully talented actors, singers, dancers, and choreographers who had spent months working tirelessly to perfect every scene in the play. In addition, special thanks were given to the technical crew for sound, lighting, and visual effects.

For those who aren’t as familiar with the story, In The Heights is told from the perspective of Usnavi, the owner of a bodega store, right on the corner of a largely populated, Hispanic neighbourhood in Washington Heights. A place where everyone dreams to create a better life for themselves.

But the question remains, What’s holding them back from pursuing their dreams?

The show takes us on an emotional journey, as we learn the importance of family, honesty, and following your dreams. We were also able to get a better look at some of the characters that were introduced throughout the show, especially Abuela, who played a huge part in the story.

Recognition for Abuela, played by Mar is due. Mar gave a great performance playing Abuela, especially while singing “Paciencia Y Fe”, during one of the most emotional scenes of the entire production. When interviewed, Mar was quoted saying:

It was a great experience! Our class and club bonded over the shared experiences of anxiety over not getting our cues right. However, I personally loved being in the show, and playing as Abuela really helped me appreciate my love for theatre.

Mar (Abuela’s actor)

Mar is a strong inspiration for aspiring actors within our community.

As a whole, the show was done well and had a cast in which you could tell had good chemistry. After watching the show myself, I can say that there was a lot of talent among the actors, and I cannot wait to see what this group can do in the future!
