HCDSB School Buildings CLOSED to Students on Monday, November 7th

Sunday, November 6, 2022

We are providing an update on the email sent on Friday regarding the provincial labour dispute with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

HCDSB has been monitoring this situation very closely over the weekend, and at this point, this is what we know:

  • The Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) proceeding was held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, coming to an end at about 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. A decision has not yet been communicated by the Chair of the OLRB – it may follow this evening, but it is not guaranteed.
  • CUPE has also communicated that its full withdrawal of services/protest will continue on Monday, November 7th.

In light of the above, we are proceeding as though the CUPE job action will continue tomorrow, and we will move ahead with the contingency plan that was shared on Friday:

  • School buildings will remain CLOSED to all students on Monday, November 7th and we will continue with asynchronous instruction.
    • Lessons and expectations will be shared via the learning platform. Learning materials for students will be adjusted and made available, as required.
    • Our school will use this day to distribute technology to families and prepare for the provision of synchronous instruction.

If job action continues beyond Monday, on Tuesday, November 8th we will transition to synchronous instruction for all students.

Further Updates & Additional Information

As this situation continues to evolve, there is a chance that HCDSB may receive further updates this evening which may alter the plan for tomorrow. Should this be the case, HCDSB will send a follow-up communication to all staff and families by 6:30 a.m. tomorrow morning (Monday, November 7th).

Any new updates will be shared in the following ways:

Thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding as we navigate through this unprecedented period of job action.
