School Communication #3

Good morning, Assumption Parents/Guardians,

We wanted to update you to let you all know that we have had an extremely successful 1st week of school. Extra-curriculars are starting back up and the energy in the school is fantastic!  Our Vice Principal, Mrs. Thomas, has moved on to become an administrator at St. Anne’s C.E.S. in the HCDSB, so Mr. Laurin and myself have welcomed Mrs. Davison to Assumption, and she will be assuming Mrs. Thomas’ portfolio.  The three of us had the opportunity to meet all of our students in grade level assemblies this week and officially welcomed them back to school and set out some tips/reminders regarding our school policies and code of conduct.  To see our Grade Level PowerPoint, please click Assumption Grade Assembly Sem 1 2023.pdf .  There are a few items for both parents and students.

We do have some important reminders and updates for parents and guardians … might be lengthy, but please read until the end.

School Fees for 2023/2024 School Year – Supporting Assumption (SchoolCashOnLine):

Managing a successful high school and the various programs that are associated with it, is not easy.  However, with the support of our school families, we are able to run the various events, teams and clubs that impact all students and allows them a more rewarding and enriched school experience.  We are still hoping to collect the various fees from families to help us achieve this.  If you were unable to pay at Option Sheet time in the spring, please contribute to these now so we can continue to offer the programming we do for your student(s).  Below is a breakdown of the various fees associated with your child’s school year:

Student Activity Fee – 2023/2024 ($65./Year)  The Student Activity Fee includes, but is not limited to the following: – MySchool Day App; Student Yearbook; School Assemblies, Special Events (guest speakers); Facilitating Student Leadership, Conferences; School Functions; After School Curricular (Literacy, Numeracy, Student Success). The Student Activity Fee supports activities and materials that enhance school life experience. Unfortunately, those who do not pay the student activity fee will not receive a yearbook.

Crusaders Care Initiative 2023-20234 ($20./Year)  This fee is for paid civvies days (last Thursday of the month) which support many charities (local, national and international causes), as well as needs within our school community. Civvies / Spirit and themed days will be announced throughout the school year.  There may be extra days announced as well with a suggested donation to that specific cause eg: the United Way, Canadian Cancer Society, Halton Food for Thought, etc …

Athletic Fee – Team Sports – 2023/2024 – $70./Year  The Athletic Fee is for students who play on Assumption’s sports teams.  The Athletic Fee offsets some of the costs associated with running a successful athletic program. Athletic Fees will cover such things as equipment maintenance and replacement, uniform repair and replacement, awards, transportation overruns, referee fees, and a portion of athletic banquet ticket. This fee is collected once per year, regardless of how many teams a student plays on.
Please note:
the individual Team Fees for your student will be found under a separate listing.

A Donation to Assumption:  At anytime, you can make a donation to Assumption C.S.S. by going to SchoolCashOnLine.  You would sign in and click the Make A Donation button on the right hand side of the page.  You must type in “Donation to Assumption” to make sure the funds are designated to our school. Please note where you would like the Donation to go to (ie: Crusaders Care, Assumption Theatre, Crusaders Athletics, etc …).  Donations over $25. will automatically generate a tax receipt.  We are extremely grateful for any and all donations!

School Council Nominations:

  • We encourage parents to participate in Assumption’s Catholic School Council. Our COUNCIL ELECTION PROCEDURES are as follows:
  • A “School Council’s” regulation under the Education Act, which came into effect in December 2000, sets out specific requirements regarding the composition of School Councils and election processes.  It is expected that the obligations set out in the regulations are observed each year.
  • One of the requirements of the regulation is that the School Council elections must take place within the first 30 days of each school year.  At Assumption, we invite you to consider nominating yourself, or another parent candidate, by Tuesday, September 19th.  The receipt of the nomination will be confirmed in writing.
  • The date of the first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 26th,  at 6:00 p.m.  in the school’s library.   We look forward to working closely with the new Assumption Catholic School Council, and for it to be a fulfilling and productive 2023 – 2024 school year!

Volunteering at Assumption C.S.S.

At Assumption Catholic Secondary School, we firmly believe that Catholic education is a partnership between home, school, and parish.  We value opportunities to work with clergy, parents, guardians, and caregivers to enhance the educational and co-curricular experiences of our students.  While we have had an abundance of parent volunteers over the past year, I would like to extend a special thanks to the following volunteer groups:

  • Catholic School Council
  • Presenters at various staff/parent/student workshops and leadership initiatives
  • Drivers for sporting events and field trips
  • Fundraising
  • Used Uniform Sale
  • Education and Career Life Planning Committee
  • Safe Schools Committee

Please know that your contributions to the school community are much appreciated.

If you plan on volunteering at Assumption, please review HCDSB’s policy and procedure regarding Volunteers in our schools:

II-37 Volunteers in Catholic Schools (hcdsb.org)

VI-14 Transportation of Students in Private Vehicles Driven by Volunteer Drivers (hcdsb.org)

If you wish to participate as a volunteer in any capacity throughout the 2023-2024 school year, we will require a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check to be provided to our main office. This will be kept on file for the school year. Note that we cannot permit parents to drive students, other than their own children, to and from school sports or other events without an updated copy of this document. Volunteer Drivers must also complete a Volunteer Driver Form, found on pages 4-5 of Procedure VI-14

For further information about how to acquire a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check, please visit: Record Checks – Halton Regional Police Service (haltonpolice.ca)

Attendance:

End of Day Procedures:

  • To help ensure the safety of our students, students are not allowed to remain in the building (unsupervised) past 3:00 p.m.
  • Students who are part of a supervised team, committee or group can stay until the game/practice/meeting is over – then they must leave immediately as they are no longer supervised.
  • Our front doors are locked for entry at 3:00 p.m.  Exceptions are made for games, meetings and more.
  • Our library is open after school from 2:15 – 3:15 p.m. for students wishing to use their services.  As this is supervised, students are to leave the building when the library closes.

Student Parking:

  • Parking for students is extremely limited here at the school – we have 40 student parking spots for student parking.  Student Parking Spaces will be painted with blue lines.
  • Register Cars.  All students MUST register any car(s) they are driving and planning to park on school property – this registration can be done through the main office
  • Parking Passes Displayed.  Once registered, students must display the Assumption parking pass anytime the registered car is parked on school property.  Students are not allowed to lend their parking passes to other students.  This will result in the parking pass being revoked.
  • Please Note: Registering a car for student parking does not guarantee a parking spot.  There may be more parking passes issued then available parking passes – this varies from year-to-year.  Anyone eligible has the opportunity to register a vehicle and it is on a fist come, first serve basis.  Once registered, students are not to park:
    1. In handicap spaces
    2. In the fire lane
    3. At St. Paul’s Elementary School
    4. At Ebenezer Canadian Reformed Church
    5. Any spot that is not identified as a student parking spot (again, by the blue lines)

Vaping/Smoking on School Property – Fair Notice Warning

Please note that there is absolutely no vaping/smoking on school property. If caught, a one (1) day suspension from school will be issued.  If caught a send time, further suspensions and consequences will be given.  Do not bring any vaping or smoking paraphernalia to Assumption C.S.S.

My School Day App:

  • Please take the time to download the MySchoolDay App.  Click on the following resource for easy download instructions:

    3. Coaches and Club Organizer’s messaging
    4. Any enrolled teachers to post class announcements and homework

Run for Burlington – Student Volunteer Opportunity

It’s Rahim from Run For Burlington.  We’re excited to announce the 2nd Annual Run For Burlington charity run taking place on Sunday, October 1st, 2023, at Spencer Smith Park to raise funds for the Joseph Brant Hospital & Foundation.

Our 1st event last year was a tremendous success as we raised $10,000 with the support of over 200 participants, volunteers, and sponsors from across Burlington. This year, we hope to make this year’s event ever more successful with your help. We are looking for help from Assumption High in getting sign-ups, volunteers, and fundraising. More details about our event are at https://runforburlington.ca or on the attached flyers. Volunteers, registrations for the run, and donations can be done at https://raceroster.com/events/2023/75697/run-for-burlington

We are sending invitation emails to the local schools to encourage Students and Teachers to register, create fundraisers, and grow the excitement. We have thousands of flyers to deliver and have opportunities for Students to volunteer. They can register under the ‘Volunteer’ section on the RaceRoster page. Volunteer Link Here

Looking forward to hearing from you – please let me know if you have any questions! Kind regards, Rahim Piracha, Sponsorship Engagement, Run For Burlington, 289-400-5015, www.runforburlington.ca
