Pathways

Pathways is a part of the Ministry of Education’s Student Success Initiative, which is transforming our system. The goal of Pathways is to prepare students for the future. It is important for students to find success and joy in their learning throughout high school and beyond. Pathways assists students in planning and pursuing a post-secondary destination that relates to their interests, skills and abilities.

The Student Success Team at the HCDSB helps create an environment where student success is experienced at various levels. Student interests may vary and as such, their learning experiences differ. Some students may be interested in the different programs we offer such as the Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) or Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs (OYAP), while other students will want to connect with the variety of academic, social and emotional supports.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs (OYAP)

Students participating in the semester long Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program will gain on-the-job training and experience in a skilled trade while earning credits towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Students will also accumulate workplace hours that count towards both secondary school co-op credits and the requirements of an apprenticeship program. They will also have an opportunity to receive Level 1 Apprenticeship in-school training or be eligible to write an exemption test for their Level 1 Apprenticeship. Students will also earn college credits while still in high school. Students must plan to complete all compulsory subjects prior to entering an OYAP Program.

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

A Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector, while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

These programs let students focus on a career path that matches their skills and interests. Each Specialist High Skills Major is a bundle of 8 to 12 courses within a selected field/sector completed in Grades 11 and 12. Students choosing a SHSM program learn on the job with employers as well in school, earning valuable industry certification and training related to their chosen sector.
